How to Get Rid of Brown Spots on Your Body

The brown spots on your body are age spots caused from too much exposure to the sunlight. Age spots usually occur when you are middle-aged, but they can appear even on young people's skin. The brown spots on your body are caused by a decreased amount of melanin in your skin. When your skin is exposed to the sun, the sunlight destroys the collagen and elastin in your skin. Collagen and elastin keep your skin young looking, and without those elements in your skin, age spots form on your body. You can, however, get rid of the brown spots on your body by taking vitamins, regularly cleansing your skin and staying out of the sun.

Step 1

Avoid the sun. Sun is the the main cause of age spots and will make your current sun spots worse. Try to stay out of direct sunlight. If you have to be in the sun, wear a hat and sunscreen that is over an SPF of 15. Cover as much of your body as possible.

Step 2

Exfoliate your skin. Go to the pharmacy and buy a loofah or scrubber for your skin. Also buy a chemical-free, natural soap. In the bath or shower, use the loofah and soap to firmly scrub your whole body. This will remove the top layer of your skin, the layer that contains the dead skin cells that have the most melanin. By getting rid of the dead skin, you can reduce the appearance of your brown spots.

Step 3

Use lemon juice. Lemon juice contains a natural bleach that can help fade your age spots. Buy a fresh lemon or a bottle of lemon juice from the grocery store. Squeeze or pour the juice onto a cotton ball and rub over the brown spots on your body. Let the juice soak into your skin.

Step 4

Apply body lotion. There are many over-the-counter lotions you can buy to help get rid of your brown spots, but look for the ingredients hydroquinone, vitamin C and retinol. You can also go to the dermatologist and get a prescription medication. According to the Mayo Clinic, retinoids and mild steroids can help get rid of your age spots.

Step 5

Use buttermilk. Like lemon juice, buttermilk also contains a natural bleach that will help get rid of the age spots on your skin. Buttermilk helps your skin cells grow faster, which will make your skin healthier and reduce the color of the dark spots. Soak a cotton ball in buttermilk and rub on your age spots.
