Coed volleyball is a popular form of volleyball played most commonly in recreational leagues. Normally, rules for coed volleyball are the same as they are for basic volleyball. The one major difference is rules dictating the gender of the players on the team.
Gender Rules
Coed teams, by definition, must have men and women on the team. The rules regarding the composition and playing time of the members of a team will generally vary from league to league. Usually, teams must be compromised of equal male and female members. Some may require only a set number of members of a certain gender. In addition, teams will most often have to have at least one member of each gender on the court at all times.
Logistics
Volleyball is played indoors on a hard, flat surface with dimensions of 18 meters by 9 meters. There should be at least 2 meters of space surrounding the court to ensure player safety. Coed volleyball usually sets the net at the regulation women's height of 7 feet, 4 inches.
Game Rules
There are six players on each team. The game begins with a serve in which the server stands out of bounds, behind the endline and hits the ball over the net toward the opponents' side of the court. A team is allowed to hit the ball a maximum of three times before it must be returned back over the net to the opponents. Players are allowed to hit the ball with any part of the body, but cannot catch, throw or kick the ball and no player can hit the ball twice consecutively.
Rotation
A volleyball team is positioned with three front-row players and three back-row players. Each time the team receiving serve scores a point, players rotate clockwise. The rotation ensures all players on a team have a chance to serve. In coed volleyball, it ensures male and female players serve during the game, and that male and female players are positioned in the front and back rows. Some leagues may require that at least one member of each gender be in the front and back court at all times.
Scoring
When a team fails to return the ball over the net to their opponents, the opposing team gains a point. Each volleyball league will dictate the amount of points needed to win a set. Most leagues follow women's rules, in which the first team to 25 points wins the set. Coed volleyball games can either be played best of three set or best of five.
