DHEA is an abbreviation for dehydroepiandrosterone, a sex hormone produced by women. According to the "Human Reproduction Update" by Dr. M. Panjari and Dr. Susan Davis, DHEA provides "a large precursor reservoir for the intracellular production of androgens and [estrogen hormones]." Research evidence suggests that DHEA supplementation might be beneficial to women on many levels.
Sexual Function
Because DHEA is a biosynthetic reagent used to make androgens (sex hormones responsible for feelings of desire), Panjari and Davis suggest that supplementation might help improve libido, particularly in postmenopausal women. A recent study by the doctors indicates that some women experience enhanced sexual interest and performance with DHEA supplementation.
Adrenal Function
According to the Mayo Clinic, DHEA also might help women with adrenal insufficiency. Panjari and Davis echo this sentiment, noting in their research summary: "The studies of DHEA therapy in women with adrenal insufficiency suggest that this group is the most likely to derive health benefits from DHEA supplementation."
Prolonged Youth
Life Extension, a website that provides information on anti-aging supplements, calls DHEA a metabolite of the "master hormone." It says that because DHEA is synthesized into so many other hormones, it plays an important role in keeping the body youthful. "Modern hormone replacement therapy strives to recreate the youthful balance of hormones in the body--and this is where DHEA's value really stands out," the website says.
