Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit the body in many ways. It is used to improve heart health and lower cholesterol, and its hydrating properties also make it beneficial for hair and skin. Fish oil can be found in supplements or can be consumed by eating fresh fish, such as mackerel, salmon, albacore tuna and swordfish. Taking 500 to 1,000 mg of fish oil supplements a day or eating two 3 ounce servings of fish per week can provide health benefits. Always follow the directions on a fish oil supplement or those of your doctor, since fish oil can cause bleeding when consumed in large doses.

Hair and Skin Uses

Fish oil works to regulate hormone production, reducing the occurrence of hair loss and acne. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help to reduce acne and repair skin. Fish oil hydrates the hair and skin, making hair softer, and skin more elastic and smooth.

Heart Health

Fish oil is used to benefit the heart, and reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels. According to the Mayo Clinic, people who eat fish regularly will be less likely to die of heart disease. The oil decreases clumping of blood platelets, reducing the risk of a clot forming that can cause a heart attack. It also slows hardening of arteries and lowers the body's production of triglycerides, which can lead to heart disease or a stroke. Fish oil raises levels of good cholesterol, called high density lipoprotein, and lowers blood pressure.

Joint Health and Other Uses

Fish oil's anti-inflammatory properties reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis and help to relieve joint pain. According the Mayo Clinic, fish oil can also help prevent and relieve conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, migraines, colon cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, menstrual cramps, male infertility, osteoporosis, glaucoma and panic disorders. However, more studies are needed to determine exactly how much fish oil helps these conditions.
