Aromatherapy remedies use essential oil mixtures and aromas to change moods, excite the emotions and relax the body. Aromatherapy, regarded as a new age modality, dates back centuries and has been passed from healer to healer. For years aromatherapy remedies have relieved symptoms from the common cold to more serious conditions.
According to the AGORA Project, aromatherapy works on the nervous system and physical body. Many of the essential oils used in aromatherapy contain antibacterial and antiviral properties. Aromatherapy essential oils can be used in a nebulizer, in a spritzer to spray on your pillow prior to sleep, or in a warm bath.
A Sound Sleep
Sleep, one of the most important aspects of health, eludes many people during stressful times. Aromatherapy is used at night in formulas specifically designed to promote sleep and relaxation.
Several essential oils promote a restful and relaxing sleep. Lavender is especially good at calming the nervous system, relaxing the body and enabling blissful sleep. Chamomile's calming properties soothe upset stomachs as well as promote sleep. The chamomile flower is sweet and fruity, and assists in relaxing the mind and body. Bergamot, a citrus based oil, relieves stress and promotes well-being. Sandalwood's musky scent is calming and relaxes the nervous system.
Relieving Menstrual Discomfort
According to the National Women's Health Information Center, 75 percent of women experience premenstrual symptoms, ranging range from bloating, breast tenderness and headaches to insomnia, and last from two days to two weeks before menstruation. Aromatherapy has helped many women over the years to alleviate many of these issues.
If PMS symptoms cause you to feel tired or rundown, try an essential oil of lemon to energize you. If bloating causes you discomfort during PMS, add either lemon or grapefruit oil to a compress or bath. Many PMS sufferers experience irritability. Bergamot or geranium will help change your mood and cause situations to seem less aggravating.
Headache Relief
Headaches can be mild or debilitating, and affect more than just your head. Migraines affect your eyesight and cause nausea. Aromatherapy with peppermint or lavender eases the blood vessels and relaxes the nerves. Peppermint oil rubbed on the temples and the back of your neck alleviates many headaches. Lavender oil can be placed in a warm bath, or warm water for use along with a compress.
