Escitalopram oxalate, commonly referred to and marketed as Lexapro, is primarily prescribed as an antidepressant. Lexapro is part of a family of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). These drugs increase the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the body. Serotonin is responsible for mood regulation, appetite, sleep, memory and learning. Lexapro is commonly prescribed for individuals suffering from depression, social phobias, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. As with any prescription or over-the-counter medication, some unwanted side effects may result from the consumption of Lexapro.
Common Side Effects
Individuals who are prescribed Lexapro may experience some mild side effects when first beginning to take the drug. Common side effects include nausea, headache and lack of energy. These effects are usually temporary, and most likely will subside once the body becomes accustomed to the medication.
Weight Gain
A number of people experience weight gain while taking Lexapro. Weight gain is not normally attributed to a physical manifestation associated with Lexapro, but is usually associated with a change in eating habits due to depression.
Sexual Side Effects
Individuals who are prescribed Lexapro may notice a change in their sexual habits or sexual function. Men who take Lexapro may experience impotence or premature ejaculation. Women who take Lexapro may find it difficult to achieve orgasm. People of both sexes may experience a loss of libido or normal sex drive.
Insomnia
Insomnia can also be a side effect associated with Lexapro consumption. Individuals who find it difficult to fall asleep or who wake up in the middle of night and cannot go back to sleep are suffering from insomnia. If patients experience insomnia while on Lexapro, they should consult a physician.
Dry Mouth
Dry mouth is commonly experienced while using Lexapro. Many things will counteract dry mouth, such as eliminating alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, eliminating salty or spicy foods, chewing gum or drinking plenty of water.
Paresthesia
Paresthesia is defined as an abnormal tingling of the skin. Individuals who are prescribed Lexapro may experience a tingling, itching or burning sensation on the head, arms, legs or feet.
