Your desired body weight is an important factor in designing your weight loss program. A physician determines your recommended weight based on factors such as your physical condition and body type. You can estimate the range for your ideal body weight from your height and gender. These calculations account for typical differences in body fat distribution between men and women. This procedure assumes you're not physically active and have an average body type.
Step 1
Determine the equations that provide the recommended weight range if you're female. Your body mass index (BMI) should be in the range of 19.1 to 25.8 kilograms/square meter (kg/m^2). Divide by the conversion factor to pounds of 703 to get a BMI between 0.0272 and 0.0367 pounds/square inch (lb/in^2). BMI = weight / (height x height), so weight = (height x height) x BMI. Therefore, your weight should be in the range of (height x height) x 0.0272 pounds and (height x height) x 0.0367 pounds where your height is in inches.
Step 2
Calculate the equations that provide the recommended weight range if you're male. Your BMI should be in the range of 20.7 and 26.4 kg/m^2. Divide by the conversion factor of 703 to get a BMI between 0.0294 and 0.0376 lb/in^2. Your weight should therefore be in the range of (height x height) x 0.0294 pounds and (height x height) x 0.0376 pounds.
Step 3
Derive the weight range for a specific height if you're female. Assume for this example that you're 65 inches tall. The equations in Step 1 show that your recommended weight is between (65 x 65) x 0.0272 pounds and (65 x 65) x 0.0367 pounds. This provides a weight range of 115 to 155 pounds.
Step 4
Compute the weight range for a specific height if you're male. Assume for this example that you're 68 inches tall. The equations in Step 2 show that your recommended weight is (68 x 68) x 0.0294 pounds and (68 x 68) x 0.0376 pounds. This provides a weight range of 136 to 174 lbs.
