Toenail fungus is an uncomfortable and persistent problem caused by a living fungus that gets under the nail and takes root. The fungus, called onychomycosis, thrives in dark, warm environments, such as under a nail, and can be caused by a variety of things. Toenail fungus is typically contracted in warm, wet areas such as locker rooms, spas, or public showers, but some people just have a genetic disposition for attracting it. Because toenail fungus can be so hard to get rid of, and has such a high likelihood of reoccurrence, it's important to get it under control right away. There are many anti-fungal medications on the market, but some of the easiest and cheapest are the natural remedies you have at home.

Vick's Vaporub

Vick's Vaporub, a combination of the essential oils camphor, eucalyptus and menthol, was developed in the late 1890s to help with chest congestion but has since become a favorite home remedy for a number of ailments, toenail fungus among them. According to online magazine GrannyMed, the three primary ingredients in Vick's have antimicrobial and antifungal properties, which kill the bacteria. Vick's can be purchased at any drugstore, and should be applied directly to the toenail twice a day. Depending on the severity of the infection, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few months to completely kill the fungus.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an essential oil that comes from the leaves of the Australian tea tree. According to GrannyMed, scientific studies have shown tea tree oil to be effective at killing fungal infections in the skin. Like the ingredients in Vick's, and all essential oils, tea tree oil has antimicrobial and antifungal properties that will kill the bacteria. Dilute it with another oil, such as olive oil or lavender oil, and apply it directly to the toenail with a cotton ball three times a day.

Vinegar

Vinegar works to kill toenail fungus by reversing the effects of the fungus and relieving the discomfort it causes. Toenail fungus changes the pH value of your skin, causing it to become more alkaline. Vinegar, which is acidic, will help restore balance to your skin as it kills the fungus, and relieve some of the itching and pain the fungus can cause. Any type of vinegar can be used, but apple cider vinegar tends to be the most common. Create a mixture that is half vinegar and half water, and soak your toes in it daily for 30 minutes.
