Early pregnancy is an exciting time for the new parents-to-be. Signs and symptoms of pregnancy can begin as early as 1 to 2 weeks following conception. Not all women will experience the same signs and symptoms at the same time. Your symptoms may also differ from those of a previous pregnancy. If you are pregnant with twins, your symptoms may appear earlier and seem stronger in intensity. There are 13 early signs of pregnancy that you should be aware of.

Tender or Swollen Breasts

Tender or swollen breasts may be one of the first symptoms that you experience. Breasts may feel tender to the touch and appear heavy and fuller than usual.

Breast Changes

The areola (darkened area around the nipple) may appear darker in color and larger in size. The appearance of blue veins can appear on breast tissue.

Implantation Bleeding and Cramping

You may notice a small amount of vaginal bleeding or spotting with mild uterine cramping in early pregnancy. Known as implantation bleeding, it happens when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus---about 10 to 14 days after fertilization, reports Mayo Clinic.

Morning Sickness

Nausea and vomiting, also known as morning sickness, may appear early in pregnancy. The hormones of pregnancy cause the gastrointestinal tract to slow down, making you more prone to morning sickness.

Food Aversions and Cravings

You may experience food aversions and cravings in early pregnancy. This is thought to be related to hormonal changes. You can also experience a heightened sensitivity to certain odors during this time.

Fatigue

Fatigue is a common sign of early pregnancy. You may feel more tired and sleepy than usual.

Uterine Cramping

You may experience mild uterine cramping without bleeding in early pregnancy. This is thought to occur in relation to the stretching of the uterus that occurs to accommodate your little one.

Urinary Frequency

Urinary frequency may be a symptom of early pregnancy. During pregnancy, the amount of blood and other fluids in your body increases, which leads to extra fluid being processed by your kidneys and ending up in your bladder, states BabyCenter.com.

Headache

Many women suffer from headache in early pregnancy. Higher hormone levels attribute to the development of a headache.

Constipation

Pregnancy hormones slow down the gastrointestinal tract. This can lead to constipation early in pregnancy.

Abdominal Bloating

In early pregnancy, you may experience abdominal bloating. This bloating might be similar to the bloating you may experience prior to your menstrual period.

Missed Period and Positive Home Test

Two additional signs of early pregnancy include a missed menstrual period and a positive home pregnancy test. If you skip your period, and your test is positive, it is time to call your obstetrician to plan your first prenatal visit.
