Ginseng
The citizens of China and Korea use Panax ginseng for a wide variety of ailments, and now Western civilization realize its benefits as well. Panax ginseng is also called Chinese ginseng, Asian ginseng, Korean ginseng or just ginseng. It improves health, mental performance and physical performance according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or NCCAM. You use ginseng to lower blood glucose, and for blood pressure control, and treatment of menopausal symptoms, hepatitis C and erectile dysfunction. Side effects include headache, gastrointestinal problems and sleep issues.
Dang Gui
This Chinese herb has been used for thousands of years and also is known as Angelica sinensis. Plants for a Future calls its reputation "second only to ginseng". Take dang gui for women's ailments, such as heavy menstruation and period pain. You can also use it for liver protection and to work as an antibacterial agent. It is useful against the bacteria Bacillus dysenteriae, Bacillus cholerae, Bacillus typhi, Bacillus comma and haemolytic streptococci, according to Plants for a Future. Dang gui works with Paeonia lactiflora, Rehmannia glutinosa and Ligusticum wallichii in the Chinese tonic 'Four Things Soup', which is the most widely used Chinese tonic available.
Danshen
Danshen is botanically known as Salvia miltiorrhiza, and it is incorporated into cardiac and blood clotting remedies. Use danshen to thin the blood. Researchers are focusing on its use as an antioxidant and as a liver ailment remedy. Medline Plus, a service of the National Institutes of Health, states that danshen side effects include bleeding risks, itching, reduced appetite and stomach upset. Danshen incorporates a chemical known as 'miltirone,' which could increase drowsiness as well.
