Neti pots are a popular way to ease congestion without using over-the-counter cold medications. St. Vincent's Hospital in Australia studied neti pots and found them to be a viable way to irrigate the nasal passages. Use a neti pot to clear your sinuses for easier breathing, and remember some helpful tips that will make your neti pot experience more comfortable and effective.
Use Distilled Water
Distilled water has been boiled and cooled to remove impurities and germs. Since you'll be pouring the water into your nose, you'll need the cleanest water possible. Fill the pot with lukewarm water. To get the right temperature, heat distilled water on the stove just until it feels neutral when you test with your index finger.
Add Enough Salt
Salt water effectively breaks down mucus, making it easier to remove. If mixing your own saline solution seems daunting, fill your neti pot with store-bought saline solution, advises the Mayo Clinic. Or make your own solution by combining 1/4 tsp. of iodized salt to every 8 oz. of warm water. Make sure to stir well so that the salt dissolves before you use the neti pot.
Seal Your Nostrils
The neti pot is inserted directly into your nostril, so it's important to have a good seal so that the water does not drip out. For a more comfortable experience, coat the spout of the neti pot with petroleum jelly before sliding into your nostril. Push the spout into the nostril until you feel a tight seal of skin around the spout. As you pour the neti pot, lean forward into the sink to catch the runoff and avoid excess mess.
Aftercare
Once you've poured the neti pot through your nostril and the water has been expelled through the other nostril, blow your nose to get rid of the loosened mucus. Discovery Channel's Planet Green suggests that you leave both nostrils open as you blow, even if you have only irrigated one side. Clean and sterilize the neti pot well with hot water in preparation for your next use. Never allow someone else to use your neti pot unless it is sterilized before and after use.
