Blackheads, also called open comedones, form when oil and dead skin cells become clogged in the pores. As the oil is exposed to the air, it become oxidized and typically takes on a blackened appearance. Since blackheads can be caused by an overproduction of oil, they are prone to appear on oily spots on your skin, including the nose. If you are unable to get rid of your blackheads at home, speak to a dermatologist for more aggressive treatment options.
Step 1
Wash the face twice a day with warm water and mild soap. Use oil-free cleansers that do not contain any harsh chemicals or fragrances.
Step 2
Boil two cups of water. Add the boiling water to a bowl. Place your face directly over the bowl and wrap a towel around your head. Stay in place for five to ten minutes to open up the pores on the nose.
Step 3
Place the tip of the blackhead extractor directly over the blemish. Press down gently to push the blackhead out of the pore.
Step 4
Wipe away any debris with a clean tissue. Disinfect the tip of the blackhead extractor with an alcohol wipe if you plan to get rid of multiple blackheads on the face.
Step 5
Apply a topical over-the-counter acne treatment. Acne treatment products are available as creams, gels, pads and lotions. Choose a version that contains salicylic acid to remove dead skin cells and control excess oil. The topical solution prevents the pore from becoming clogged again and another blackhead forming.
Tips and Warnings
- You can also use pore strips to get rid of blackheads on the nose. You first wet the skin and then adhere the strip to the affected area. Once dried, the strip is pulled away and the blackheads removed.
- Avoid using a blackhead extractor if the skin is inflamed or an infection is present.
