Indigestion is a term used to describe when a person develops an upset stomach after eating. Symptoms may include bloating, nausea and heartburn. Indigestion is typically not serious and can usually be resolved at home without needing to see a doctor. But if you suffer from chronic bouts of indigestion, your doctor may recommend controlling your symptoms with antacids, proton pump inhibitors, antibiotics or other medications.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Use apple cider vinegar to get rid of heartburn. The acid in the vinegar is intended to counteract the acid in your stomach that causes heartburn. During meals, sip 4 oz. of water mixed with 1 tsp. of apple cider vinegar to prevent symptoms from manifesting. Repeat as needed. You may want to use this remedy when you know you are eating foods that have a tendency to cause indigestion.
Food Avoidance
Finding out your food triggers for indigestion and avoiding these items may be the easiest way to treat indigestion naturally. Common culprits include carbonated beverages, alcohol, caffeinated drinks, chocolate, acidic fruits and spicy meals. If you develop symptoms after eating a certain food item, avoid that food to see whether this alleviates the problem. Limiting your fat intake may help resolve indigestion naturally since being overweight increases your chances of suffering from digestive issues. When you are overweight, excess fat places pressure on the abdomen and can lead to acid splashing up into the esophagus. Choose lower-fat versions of dairy products, avoid fried foods and eat leaner cuts of meat.
Exercise
Exercise promotes better digestion, according to the Mayo Clinic, and should be done for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week. Daily exercise also can help keep your weight under control, which also reduces the risk of indigestion. Activities to consider include walking, jogging, swimming, tennis, basketball and cycling.
Ginger Root
The Doctors Book of Home Remedies recommends ginger root as an alternate home remedy for digestive issues, as it may help soak up excess acid causing your symptoms. If you have fresh ginger root available at home for cooking purposes, take 2 to 4 g daily to relieve gas and nausea. You may also chew on 1/4 oz. of fresh ginger for several minutes to relieve digestive problems.
