Chinese medicine has integrated pressure points into pain treatment for over 5,000 years. Stimulation of the body's pressure points, or acupoints, releases endorphins and inhibits pain, according to Columbia University Medical Center. A pencil eraser, fingertip and knuckles are appropriate tools for self-applied pressure. The Acupressure Institute recommends that individuals with chronic disease or serious health condition contact a doctor before using applying pressure to any points on the body.
Headaches
A pressure point for headaches is located on the inner wrist, according to Crossroads Counseling Group. Press your fingertip on the largest crease of your inner wrist, directly under your pinkie finger. During the first 30 seconds, it is normal to feel twinges, numbing sensations and tingling in the pressure point. Release after 30 seconds. Another pressure point for headaches is located on your middle finger. Press directly above your nail, on the side of your finger closest to your thumb. Relieve a headache by applying pressure to a point located on your shoulders. Place your index finger halfway between your neck and the outside of your shoulder. Apply pressure and hold for 30 seconds or until your headache symptoms decrease.
Back Pain
Back pain affects eight out of 10 people, reports MedlinePlus. Several different acupoints can relieve lower back pain. The first point is on the outside of the foot, directly behind the lower part of the ankle bone. If that pressure point does not respond, change your finger positioning slightly until your touch evokes a tender response. Some people require slight changes in positioning to achieve the desired effects. Another pressure point for back pain is located on the foot. Lift your left ankle and place it on your right knee. Place your index finger on the sole of your left foot, an inch below your second toe. Apply pressure for 30 seconds or until you experience symptom reduction. A third pressure point for backaches is located behind your knees. Stand up straight and lower your chest toward your legs. Place your right index finger behind your right knee, resting it on the crease that occurs when you bend your leg. Place your left index finger behind your left knee, likewise. Apply pressure for 30 seconds, and then release.
Heartburn
Heartburn causes a burning sensation in the chest. Two different pressure points can alleviate heartburn-related pain, according to Crossroads Counseling Group. The first point is located on the inside of the wrist. Place your thumb on the middle of the inner wrist's largest crease. Then lower it two thumb widths and apply pressure. The second point is the same as the first one described for tension headaches.
