External Triggers for Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes inflammation of the skin on the face. The condition is chronic and affects the cheeks, nose, eyelids, forehead and the chin, according to Medline Plus, a website of the National Institutes of Health. The inflammation appears as swollen, reddened areas or as acne. Some individuals may also have tiny blood vessel eruptions along the surface of the skin. The cause is unknown and although there is no cure, treatments may help decrease the symptoms associated with rosacea. Figuring out the triggers that cause a flare-up may help control symptoms.

Foods and Beverages

Certain foods and beverages may cause a rosacea flare up, especially if they are hot in temperature. Spicy foods may also trigger the condition. Other foods that may aggravate rosacea include cheese, yogurt, avocados, citrus fruits, bananas, chocolate and lima beans. In addition to hot beverages such as coffee, tea and hot chocolate, alcoholic drinks may cause rosacea to flare up. Red wine, beer, champagne, gin, vodka and bourbon are especially known for triggering the condition, according to the National Rosacea Society.

Weather and Temperature

Exposure to the elements can cause rosacea to show symptoms. Avoiding harsh conditions such as strong sunlight, extreme temperatures, either hot or cold, and wind may help decrease flare-ups of rosacea. An increase in humidity may also cause the condition. Taking hot baths, showers, saunas or hot tub can mimic the increased weather temperatures and cause symptoms. Exercise and physical activity increases body temperature and can cause rosacea.

Medications

Taking medications may increase the chance of triggering rosacea. Topical and oral steroids as well as vasodilators are the most common types of medications to cause problems. The steroids mimic stress in the body, and stress can lead to a flare-up of rosacea. The vasodilators treat high blood pressure by dilating constricted blood vessels. This dilation of the vessels can trigger the symptoms of rosacea.

Personal Care Products

Applying certain products to the skin of the face may cause the symptoms of rosacea to occur. Products containing fragrances, alcohol or witch hazel are most commonly irritating to individuals with this condition. Lotions, cosmetics, hair products and face washes may contain these ingredients and cause a flare-up. Products that contain acetone can also trigger rosacea, according to the National Rosacea Society.
