WebMed, an online medical resource and staff of medical doctors; and Dr. Balch, a medical doctor of over 30 years, agree that there are six ways to clean the colon. A laxative or enema are especially useful in the event of an emergency or illness that requires immediate evacuation of the colon. Colon cleansers taken my mouth include herbal formulas, parasite purges and powdered colon cleansers.
A colonic is a procedure, styled similar to an enema, that cleans the entire colon. This method has resurfaced in popularity and requires a professionally trained technician or therapist . Effective cleaning will eliminate fecal matter, parasites and mucous from the entire colon and its walls. The build up on the walls produces toxins that can enter back into the bloodstream and poison the body if not removed.
Some people actually complain of low energy, fatigue, headaches and weight gain because of these toxins. Colonics are not recommended for those with tumors in rectum or colon, recent bowel surgery, hemorrhoids, Crohn's disease, heart disease or kidney disease.
Herbal colon cleansing tea
An herbal formula is a combination of herbs that kill parasites, soften debris and allow both to be eliminated. Dr. Balch, who also practices homeopathy, recommends a combination of barberry, butternut bark, cascara sagrada, flaxseed, red raspberry, rhubarb, senna, fennel and ground garlic.
Another formula that includes boneset, elecampne, fenugreek, lobelia and yarrow is especially beneficial for expelling mucus. These can be used separately, alternating them with each use. He cautions against using lobelia regularly. Drink one cup, two hours before bedtime. Bowels will become fuller, longer, more regular and less pungent. Both formulas should be used daily for two to three weeks at the most (except for lobelia) and can be repeated in three to six months, based on need. Tea bags are also available.
Two or more herbs that are commonly used together may be already combined together. The herbs can be taken as a tea, capsule, tablet or tincture form. For the tea, combine in equal parts, steep in boiled water, and strain before drinking. Take all other forms as directed. All forms of the herbs can be found at a health food store or herb shop.
Parasite purges
Parasite purges are herbal formulas specifically for removal of parasites. These little worms come from foods we eat and thrive in an unclean colon. The more debris there is, the better they like it. Herbs that kill them so they can be eliminated can be a part of a formula, such as the garlic in Balch's formula, or can be purchased separately where herbs are bought. Follow instructions given and be sure to drink plenty of water. This product can be taken as part of oral colon therapy or about one month before a colonic.
Oral colon cleansers
Oral colon cleansers are prepackaged, herbal formulas or fiber supplements. There are a variety of them available. The herbal kind can be found where herbs are sold and have the same effect as the herbal formulas, however, require a lot more water when taken because they are powdered. Others can be found at a local pharmacy or grocery store and may not include something to eliminate parasites and mucus. Oral cleansers can also be found in capsule and pill form. Follow the instructions given.
Colonics
Colonics or colon cleansing with irrigation is a procedure done like an enema, however, it involves different equipment, much more water and must be done by a technician . Because it is a medical procedure, it must be done in an approved facility to assure cleanliness and safety. The technician or therapist may combine herbs, enzymes or supplements with the water to assist ridding the colon of parasites and bacteria.
However, the water itself is used in a variety of temperatures and pressures to flush out the colon, pulling debris build up off of the sides of the colon and from between crevices that normal elimination, laxatives. enemas and even oral colon cleansers cannot reach. The water flows from a machine into the rectum through a tube and into the colon, Then it is drawn back out. Depending on the condition of the colon, a therapist will usually recommend three procedures, three to seven days a part.
For up to approximately one week after the colonics, bowels will be frequent and loose or watery. Then, bowels should be approximately six inches long, firm and thick, and have little to no smell. Elimination should be smooth and practically effortless. When colonics remove bacteria from the colon, it does not differentiate and removes good bacteria as well. It is called "friendly bacteria" and is a necessary part of the digestive process. Following a colonic, it needs to be replaced in order to have a normal energy level and immunity.
Ask the therapist about a supplement to take. Some therapists add this to the water during the colonic. Dr. Balch recommends an herbal formula consisting of aloe vera, calendula and peppermint; add the calendula and peppermint to a cup of aloe vera juice and drink on an empty stomach, one to two times a day for three days.
Mintaining the colon
To keep the colon healthy, it must be maintained. The only way to do this is from what a person consumes. WebMed and Dr. Balch both recommend plenty of insoluble fiber, such as beans, whole grains and whole grain bread; and soluble fiber, such as fresh, non-citrus fruit, and fresh vegetables.
Raw fruit and vegetables have more fiber than cooked, and should be eaten daily; a piece of fruit for a snack and a salad with a meal is sufficient. (Avoid sweet fruits, such as pineapples, figs and prunes if diabetic or hypoglycemic.) To keep stools soft, drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day. Avoid saturated fats, sugar, processed and fried foods and oils until colon and stools return to normal (approximately one week).
Between the three colonics, drink the juice of a fresh lemon in a cup of warm water every day upon rising and at bedtime to assist in cleansing the bloodstream and liver. For optimal colon health and to eliminate the need for frequent colon cleansing, make fiber-rich, healthy foods and eight glasses of water a day, a regular diet.
