After childbirth, estrogen levels in your body decline, and you notice that you are losing hair. This is normal, as more hair follicles on your scalp are in the resting phase of the growth cycle. Once the hormones regulate again, hair growth and shedding will return to normal. You can use a few tips to lessen the hair loss and mask it, making hair care easier during the early parenting stage.
Step 1
Change your hairstyle to make your tresses look fuller. Shorter cuts, layers and different styling products can help mask hair loss. Mousse or hair-thickening shampoos and conditioners will add volume to your hair, and a shorter cut or layers will give a thicker look and make hair loss less noticeable.
Step 2
Take vitamins and minerals in conjunction with following a healthy, well-balanced nutritional plan to slow or stop excess hair loss. Vitamins B, C and E, along with zinc and biotin, are recommended by American Pregnancy to nourish the hair and promote healthy growth. Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables will provide antioxidants that help protect hair follicles and shafts from damage and falling out.
Step 3
Breastfeed your baby to keep your estrogen levels from declining. Breast stimulation from breastfeeding increases hormone production, allowing for hair growth that you had during pregnancy.
Step 4
Be patient when you notice hair loss after childbirth. Once you have reached your six-month postpartum period, normal hair growth will return as your hormone levels return to their natural balance.
