Fexofenadine, known by the prescription name Allegra, is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of hayfever and allergies, including itchy, red watery eyes, hives and itching. Unlike other antihistamines, fexofenadine does not commonly have pronounced side effects of drowsiness. Users of fexofenadine should be aware of the few rare side effects of this drug.
Pain
The most-common side effects reported by Allegra users over the age of 12 include headache, back pain and pain in the extremities. Cold, Cough and Flu
Increased incidence of cold and flu are also reported by individuals using fexofenadine. Coughs and upper respiratory tract infections are particularly common in patients aged 6 through 11.
Nausea and Diarrhea
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fatigue are potential side effects of fexofenadine use. Drug safety information provided by Sanofi-Aventis reports that the incidence of vomiting and diarrhea reactions are common in patients in the 6 month to 5-year-old age range.
Anxiety
The Mayo Clinic lists a number of anxiety-related side effects that may occur with fexofenadine use. These rare side effects include nervousness, insomnia and terrifying dreams.
Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions are rare, though possible sides effect of fexofenadine. Seek emergency attention immediately if you experience any symptoms of severe allergic shock while using fexofenadine, including flushing of the skin, gasping, increased heart rate, chest pains and fainting.
