5 Things You Need to Know About Blue-Light Acne Treatments

1. The Science of Acne

When oil is made by the sebaceous glands in your body and becomes caught in your tiny follicles or pores which prevent it from getting to your skins surface, this causes a clogged pore, bulging of the wall of the follicle involved and results in a white-topped pore. If the pore actually remained open but then becomes clogged, the area becomes dark with resulting blackhead forming. Both of these scenarios allows bacteria to live and thrive and then leaks pus into the tissues around the follicle, causing pimples.

2. This Issue of Controlling Acne

Acne is stimulated by hormonal changes causing the sebaceous glands to produce more oil than usual, increasing the actual chance of the occurrence of acne. There is some degree of increase in the chance of acne in later life due to use of medications such as birth control, menstrual periods, or using products that are oil based.

3. Treating Acne

There are numerous types of treatment used for the control and occurrence of acne. These have included antibiotics and antibacterials which are applied to the skin topically, antibiotics taken in pill form, Accutane, Retin-A, and various types of exfoliates and astringents for the skin.

4. Blue Light and Acne Care

There is a new FDA-approved treatment for acne called blue-light photo-dynamic therapy, and it is used for those people who have a moderate amount of acne that needs treating. This works by killing the type of P acne bacteria that is in the skin. This can be given along with using topical ointments to help clear up break-out areas. This provides treatment for active type of lesions and those that are considered inactive sebaceous glands alike. There is also a benefit to pre-treating the area with topical ointments prescribed by your physician which helps reduce the occurrence of pustules, papules and lesions.

5. Blue-Light Treatments

The wonderful part of this treatment is that is it not an invasive treatment. You only need to sit in from of the light for about 15 minutes and just let it work. Treatments are done on a weekly basis and the length of time you continue with them is based on the amount of acne and its severity. Unlike other therapies, blue-light treatment has a very small chance of having any side effects happen. These are relatively gentle light treatments and do not damage any surrounding areas or tissues. In two to four treatments, you should see a reduction in the amount and severity of your acne.
