Essential oils are potent liquid extracts derived from the leaves, stems, blossoms and seeds of specific plants. Oils are extracted through a process of steam distillation or heat extraction. The use of essential oils is part of the alternative, holistic practice of aromatherapy used to improve psychological, physical and spiritual well-being.
Significance
The use of essential oils dates back to over 1,000 years. The Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all used essential oils for therapeutic, ritual, spiritual and fragrant uses. Today the demand for essential oils has resurfaced as a nontoxic, additive-free alternative. Essential oils are being used once again for their therapeutic, aromatic and cosmetic benefits.
Function
The use of essential oils functions as a method to treat a variety of conditions. Some of these conditions include anxiety, stress and pain relief. Aromatherapists believe there is a direct link associated with smell and human emotion and that specific smells may have a therapeutic effect on mood, health and overall well-being.
Considerations
Essential oils are not the same as perfume oils or fragrance oils. Essential oils are derived from the pure essence of the plant and are highly concentrated. Perfume and fragrance oils are manufactured with artificial and synthetic ingredients and do not have the therapeutic effects found in pure essential oil. The United States does not regulate the term "aromatherapy" on products or advertising, so read all labels before purchasing any aromatherapy product.
How to Use Essential Oils
You can use essential oils in a variety of ways. Use them with steam inhalation to help with colds, flu and sore throat. Try essential oil as an air freshener by using a diffuser or lamp scent ring method, available through many aromatherapy companies. In addition, essential oils can also be used to make body spray, lotions, soaps and shower gels. Read the directions and safety precautions on oil labels before using.
Types
There are many types of essential oils. Popular scents include lavender (Lavendula officinalis), sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), sandalwood (Santalum album) and ylang ylang (Cananga odorata). According to The University of Maryland Medical Center, lavender essential oil can be used to possibly treat symptoms associated with anxiety and panic attacks.
