Sinus pressure is the result of irritated or inflamed sinuses due to allergies, the common cold or environmental factors, according to the Mayo Clinic. When the sinus cavity becomes inflamed it leads to swelling, placing pressure on various parts of the head. Common symptoms of sinus pressure include ear pain, tooth pain, headaches, eye sensitivity and nasal discharge. Natural ways may be used in combination with traditional over-the-counter medications to help relieve sinus pressure. Talk to a doctor before using medication or natural approaches.

Humidifier

A humidifier is a device used to put moister back in the air. Purchase a cool-mist humidifier to avoid the growth of harmful bacteria. Kidshealth.org states that air that is too dry may cause greater inflammation of the sinuses and air that is too humid can cause a stuffy nose. Maintain a humidity level in your home or room between 45 and 50 percent humidity for the best results. Talking a hot shower may be helpful in relieving sinus pressure. A pot of hot water may also be used to create humidity to treat sinus pressure.

Saline

Purchase inexpensive saline spray at a local pharmacy. Saline spray is a common natural remedy for sinus pressure because it helps cleanse the sinuses while helping the nasal cavity drain excess mucus. Saline spray is safe for people of all ages, including babies and children. In children, use two to three drops of saline in each nostril while the child is lying on her back. In adults, hold one nostril shut, spray two to three sprays in the open nostril while inhaling. Gently blow the nose after using the saline spray in each nostril. Clean the tip of the saline bottle with warm soapy water to prevent the spreading of infection. Do not share a saline spray bottle with other people.

Nasal Wash

A nasal wash can be accomplished with two different methods: a neti pot or a saline wash spray bottle. A neti pot is a tea kettle shaped pot used for the purpose of cleansing the nasal passages. Place warm water mixed with the saline packet that comes with most neti pots and stir it well. Put the neti pot in one nostril, tilt the head and allow the solution to drain through the sinuses. Gently blow the nose and repeat on the other nostril. A saline wash spray bottle uses the same philosophy as a neti pot except the user presses on the bottle to force the sinus wash through the sinuses, instead of using gravity. Both methods force excess mucus out of the sinuses and help soothe the irritation.
