5 Things You Need to Know About Lacrosse Attackmen

1. Required Skills

Lacrosse attackmen must be skilled stick handlers, with both the right and left hands. Each team has three attackmen on the field at one time. The player must be physically strong and able to run constantly throughout the game. A Lacrosse field is 110 yards to 100 meters long. Endurance and strength are important, as is the ability to focus on game play while moving. Similar sports, like hockey, required all the same skills. The agility of soccer lends itself nicely to lacrosse. Add stick handling skills to create a good player quickly.

2. Equipment Used

In lacrosse, each player has a lacrosse stick. The attackman's stick is 42 inches or 106 cm long, which is the short stick. The head of a lacrosse stick is a net make with string, leather and mesh. All players must wear helmets, gloves, shoulder and elbow pads. Men wear athletic supports to prevent injury.

3. Role in the Game

Each team has three attackmen. Their job is to protect the middie or middlemen from the other teams' defense men, as the ball moves down the field towards the other teams' goal. Lacrosse is a physical game. Players can hit each other with their body and their sticks. In addition, the defense men have longer sticks than the attackmen. This difference means that the attackmen require a greater level of skill and stick handling.

4. Strategy

The rules of lacrosse allow significant latitude for the development of strategy and complex plays. Much like soccer, football or hockey, the purpose of the game is to score by getting the ball into the other teams net as many times as possible. The attackmen, together with the middlemen can advance the ball down the field through a series of passes and runs. The key to this is the ability to catch and throw the ball from the stick effectively and accurately.

5. Training is Essential

Training to be an attackman in Lacross requires cardio, muscular strength as well as certain key skills. To develop your attackman skills, drills of throwing and catching the lacrosse ball are required. Using a tennis ball for practice, take your lacrosse stick and throw the ball against a wall. Aim for specific targets and practice to improve your accuracy. Do not stand in one spot, but move around as you practice to simulate actual game play. Catching and throwing are different skills. Get a partner and practice these skills daily.
