Thrush, also known as Monilla, is an infection caused by candida yeast or fungus, states the University of Iowa. There are over 20 different types of Candida fungus, which manifests as a white coating in the mouth or tongue or as white patches or cracks at the corner of the mouth. This disease most commonly affects children and breast-feeding infants, and it is commonly caused by passage through the birth canal and contact with vaginal yeast. Thrush in adults can be caused by antibiotics, birth control pills, pregnancy, smoking, diabetes or other weakened immune system diseases, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Yogurt

The organisms that live in yogurt, called probiotics, can help treat a thrush infection. Lactobacillus acidophilus or Lactobacillus bifidobacterium restores the bowel bacteria according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Yogurt also contains calcium. University of Maryland Medical Center also states that calcium intake of 1000 to 15000 mg a day helps prevent or heal thrush infections. Yogurts that do not have active cultures also do not have probiotics. For example, yogurts flavored with sugar and artificial flavors frequently do not contain active cultures. Probiotics can also be purchased in health food and specialty food stores; they are often found in a refrigerated section.

Garlic

Garlic is a natural anti-fungal that contains the active ingredient allicin. Because thrush is a form of fungus, garlic can be an effective defense against it. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends dosage of one fresh garlic clove a day. If you choose to take garlic in supplement form, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends supplements with 4,000 to 5,000 mcg of allicin.

Pomegranate

The gel from pomegranates can kill the fungus that causes thrush, according to research published in the journal, "Mycoses." Drinking pomegranate juice may have a similar action, but there is no research on the exact amount needed to be effective.

Brush Teeth

Because brushing removes the fungus from the mouth, keeping the mouth clean helps prevent thrush and treats infection, states the University of Iowa. They recommend brushing and flossing daily as well as bi-annual dental visits. People who wear dentures need special care, as ill fitting dentures can cause thrush. Using a natural mouthwash or adding salt to the final rinse water also helps treat thrush.
