Salvia divinorum is a psychoactive plant in the Labiatae, or mint, family. According to the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) at the University of Maryland, Salvia divinorum has long been used as an aid in Mazatec healing ritual prophecies. Effects of the plant vary based upon how much is taken and method of ingestion, and there are six general levels of effects, ranging from mild to overwhelmingly strong. However, Salvia Growing online mentions that inexperienced users may only achieve mild effects in early stages of use, eventually building sensitivity to the plant with repeated use.
Level One
The first level of effects associated with Salvia divinorum is mild. A person who has ingested the plant may feel different from his "normal" self but not be able to pinpoint what is happening. She may experience an additional appreciation for her senses and feel deeply relaxed. As a result, he may also find that he has an easier time meditating.
Level Two
A person who has reached the second level of experience when using Salvia divinorum may have short-term memory loss, think less logically, and feel changes in perception without visionary effects. For example, she may feel as though the space around her is deeper or shallower than before and she may see colors or hear music with unusual intensity, but she won't necessarily see any images that don't already exist in front of her.
Level Three
A Salvia divinorum user who has reached the third experiential level may be mildly affected by visions. While he may see clear images, vivid colors and various shapes with his eyes closed, he is unlikely to experience such visual effects when his eyes are open. Moreover, she is likely to realize that what she sees isn't real.
Level Four
The fourth experiential stage is marked by heightened effects such as vivid visuals. The user may see shapes and other visions in three dimensions, he may hear voices, and he may only have a defined sense of reality when his eyes are open. Having her eyes closed, she may exist in a dream world where she travels to various lands and eras, communicates with other entities or even takes on the life of another person. According to Sage Wisdom online, at this stage, a person is thought to be entering a "shaman's world." This is the last stage before a user loses contact with his individual reality and begins to feel as though his existence has meshed with other objects or minds.
