Treadmills can be as basic as a motorized tread, or they can come with many features. A standard in most, the incline feature gives the user a way to make the workout harder and more intense. According to "NSCA's Essentials of Personal Training," the primary muscles used to walk or run on a treadmill are the quadriceps, hamstrings (thigh muscles), gluteals (buttocks) and the calf muscles--tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius and soleus. When on an incline, the hamstrings, gluteals and calf muscles are even more involved.
