High testosterone levels are believed to contribute to prostate cancer in men, according to Dr. Ray Sahelian, M.D. Lowering these levels prevents the hormone from binding itself to the blood cells and being transported to the cancer site, causing it to grow. In these instances, there are several methods of decreasing testosterone production in the body to help treat prostate cancer.
Step 1
Consume herbs and spices that contain phytoestrogens such as soy, licorice root, red clover, mistletoe, and yucca. Phytoestrogens decrease testosterone levels by shifting the hormonal balance and adrenal gland production, according to Douglas Kalman MS, RD, FACN.
Step 2
Take medications as directed by your doctor. Your doctor may prescribe testosterone decreasing medication, such as Leuprolide, to slow down the adrenal gland's production of testosterone and inhibit the hormone's binding to blood cells.
Step 3
Lower your protein intake. Protein increases muscle mass as well as boosting adrenal gland function. Protein is used as a source of assistance in body building. Lowering protein intake will regulate adrenal gland function and lower testosterone production.
Step 4
Lower intake of refined sugars and carbohydrates. These cause the body to make excess insulin, which in turn stimulates the adrenal glands to produce excess testosterone. This is especially true in diabetics. Moderate exercise will also help keep blood sugar levels in check, according to Virginia Hopkin's Health Watch.
