It's normal to experience stress throughout the day, but high stress levels can cause a variety of troublesome symptoms, including difficulty sleeping, outbursts of anger or anxiety attacks. If it's OK with your doctor, you can use herbs to help naturally reduce your stress levels with items from the drugstore or grocery store.
Panax Ginseng
Panax ginseng is known as adaptogens because it can help the body more effectively adapt to changes, says an article in "Reader's Digest." Take a panax ginseng supplement each day to help reduce symptoms associated with stress, including a racing mind and difficulty concentrating. "Reader's Digest" recommends 100 to 250 mg of panax ginseng twice a day to curb stress. Consult your doctor before taking panax ginseng. Do not take panax ginseng if you are pregnant or have a heart condition.
Kava
Kava may help increase relaxation and limit stress symptoms in some individuals, says Kathy Keville in her book, "Herbs for Health and Healing." Brew a cup of kava tea, available at drugstores or grocery stores before bed to increase relaxation, or mix a kava herb recipe using herb oils. Mix 1 tsp. each of valerian rhizome, licorice root, Siberian ginseng root, kava root and California poppy plant, recommends Keville. Mix thoroughly, then pour into an empty glass bottle with an eyedropper. Take one eyedropper of the mixture per day to help reduce stress.
Black Tea
According to a 2006 study by the University College London in the journal "Psychopharmacology," black tea may help reduce symptoms of stress. Black tea may help reduce the amount it takes to recover from a stressful experience. Although black tea may not prevent you from becoming stressed, it may help you calm down more quickly, the study suggests. Black tea contains caffeine, so it should not be consumed at night.
