Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, has been used in the Far East to treat and cure illnesses and chronic conditions for thousands of years. TCM includes thousands of herbs and herbal formulas that enhance acupuncture treatments, and are often used as treatments in and of themselves. They can be taken traditionally, in a tea, a decoction from the powdered form of the herbs, or as capsules and pills for ease of use.
Yin Qiao San
In TCM, differentiation is made between colds with "heat" signs and colds with "cold" signs. Signs of heat can be sore throat, fever and thirst. Signs of cold can be chills with fever, body aches, and typically no thirst. Yin qiao san, or yin chiao as it is sometimes spelled, is available at most health food stores, and contains a formulation that can help to relieve the beginnings of a cold that presents with signs of heat. The beginnings of a sore throat and fever are good indicators that yin qiao might be the right formula for the job. If taken within 24 hours of first feeling symptoms, as directed on the package, your cold can be headed off before it gets too serious.
Huang Lian Su Pian
This particular formula can be handy when traveling, as it can help to relieve acute cases of diarrhea. Many health food stores carry this formula, and it can also be purchased online. Follow the instructions on the package. Huang lian su pian should not be used for long-term treatments, and if diarrhea lasts for more than 3 days, people should see a doctor.
Shu Gan Wan
For those experiencing abdominal discomfort and poor digestion, shu gan wan may be a good formula to try. It increases circulation, particularly to the digestive system, which can help improve gastrointestinal function. It contains cardamom, turmeric, bupleurum, citrus peel and a few other herbs that increase digestion and help alleviate pain.
Xiao Yao Wan
According to TCM, when people feel angry and frustrated, qi (or chi) can become stuck, leading to stagnation of energy. Xiao yao wan can be used to help move qi, improve circulation and establish calm. If someone is feeling irritable and anxious, and particularly if those emotions are causing digestive issues, taking xiao yao wan can help to free the flow of qi. This formula can be found online and at many health food stores in pill form.
Dan Shen Wan
Chinese herbal formulas can also be used to help with conditions of the heart and there are claims that many can be useful alternatives to medications. Dan shen wan is a remedy that helps to dilate blood vessels and increase circulation. It can be used for angina, pain in the left arm, and heart palpitations as well as chest pains.
Yunnan Baiyao
This particular formula was actually given to soldiers in World War II, and was highly coveted. It is used to stop the bleeding of traumatic wounds and is an effective acute pain remedy. Well-known for its use during battles, the ancient Chinese swore by its lifesaving properties. It can be taken orally as well as applied topically when in its liquid form. Smaller doses can be used for children, but it should not be taken during pregnancy.
