About Thera-Band Exercise Balls

Thera-Band exercise balls are made by the Hygenic Corporation, based in Akron, Ohio. They complement a full band of Thera-Band branded exercise aids, including elastic resistance bands and tubing, band loops, FlexBars, balance boards, weights, exercise mats and soft stability products. You are likely to encounter Thera-Band exercise balls in almost any fitness or rehab setting, including gyms, physical-therapy clinics, sports complexes and yoga or Pilates studios.

Names

Although "exercise ball" is the technical name for this Thera-Band product, you're likely to hear it referred to by other generic or brand-specific names, such as balance ball, stability ball, yoga ball, Swiss ball, fitness ball and core ball.

Purpose

The manufacturer states that inflatable balls are used to strengthen muscles, improve posture and prevent back pain. Many exercisers also use exercise balls to work on stability and balance or to introduce variety to workout routines. You might also use Thera-Band exercise balls under the guidance of a physical therapist or other rehabilitation professional.

Types

There are two types of Thera-Band exercise balls. The standard ball is adequate for any exercises one might do on any exercise ball. The downside of the standard balls is that they can deflate quickly if punctured, even by something as small as a thumbtack accidentally left on the floor. The second type of Thera-Band ball, previously known as an SDS (Slow Deflate System) ball, has been replaced by the Pro Series SCP ball. These balls deflate slowly if punctured, reducing the risk of injury from a fall or sudden shift in position.

Size

Standard Thera-Band balls and Pro Series SCP balls are available in five sizes: 45 centimeters, 55 cm, 65 cm, 75 cm and 85cm. SDS balls, which have been discontinued but still can be found in gyms and other fitness settings, come in four sizes: 45 cm, 55 cm, 65 cm and 75 cm. Choose a ball according to your height. If you are 5 feet or shorter, use a 45 cm ball. A 55 cm ball suits you if you are 5 feet 1 to five feet 6. If you're 5 feet 7 to 6 feet 1, use a 65 cm ball. The 75 cm balls are for people 6 feet 2 to 6 feet 8, and you would use the 85 cm ball if you're 6 feet 9 or taller.

Cost

Thera-Band exercise balls are priced by size and style. SDS and Pro Series SCP balls cost more than standard balls.
