Butterbur, also known as butter dock or bog rhubarb, is an herbal supplement commonly used to treat headaches and migraines. It's also believed to relieve symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis, which is often referred to as simply, hay fever. Compounds found in the extract of this plant help to reduce inflammation and block histamines, according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. But like many other herbal remedies, butterbur can potentially cause side effects from its use.
Gastrointestinal Issues
Gastrointestinal issues are one of the more common side effects of butterbur, according to Drugs.com, a website dedicated to accurate and independent advice on prescription, over-the-counter and natural products. The Health Resource agrees with this claim, stating that ingestion of this herb may elicit indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation.
Liver Damage
When taken as a raw extract, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center warns that butterbur can cause liver damage. The alkaloids contained in this form are known to produce hepatotoxicity, which is defined as a chemical-induced liver damage. Symptoms associated with this condition are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fatigue, weakness and jaundice. If you suffer from liver disease or liver dysfunction, avoid taking this herbal supplement.
Allergic Reaction
Although butterbur may help to reduce symptoms of hay fever, it's also known to cause allergic reactions in some people. People suffering from ragweed, daisy, chrysanthemum or marigold allergies could experience allergic responses, according the Health Resource. It may elicit rash, hives, tingling mouth and swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face. In severe allergies, it could cause anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction to the herb.
Hormonal Issues
Butterbur may reduce the production of testosterone, cautions Drugs.com. However, this response was demonstrated in experiments with butterbur in animals. Consult a health care provider before taking any herbal supplement or extract, including butterbur.
