The University of Maryland Medical Center points out that there are a number of common causes of dry hair. Some are environmental while others are medical. But if it's just a matter of better conditioning, herbs offer a natural way to treat dry hair. Comfrey root or leaf, crushed lavender flowers, red clover and marigold are just some of the natural ingredients you can use to give your hair a healthier sheen. Mix your own shampoo, or add one or more herbal ingredients to your regular shampoo.

Herbal Hair Shampoo

Make your own herbal shampoo for dry hair by adding 1 tsp. each of dry comfrey root, chamomile and rosemary to 1 cup of water. Boil and then steep for 20 minutes before straining. Mix the herb water with 2/3 cup of a mild baby shampoo, 1 beaten egg and 1/3 cup of milk. Pour your homemade shampoo into a bottle and store in a cool, dark place between uses.

Herbal Hair Conditioner

Make your own herbal conditioner for dry hair. You will need 1 pint of water, 1 tsp. each of calendula flowers, lavender flowers, chamomile flowers and rosemary leaves. Boil the water and pour over the herbal ingredients. Steep for 30 minutes and then strain. Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the liquid. Use this as the final rinse after shampooing your hair. Leave the conditioner on your hair rather than rinsing out with clear water.

Herbal Oil Treatment

Make your own herbal oil treatment for moisturizing dry hair. You will need 2 oz. each of castor oil and aloe vera gel, and 6 drops each of rosemary, geranium and sandalwood essential oils. You can use olive oil in place of the castor oil if you want, although castor oil washes out better. Combine the ingredients and then warm the oil slightly. Comb your hair and part it into sections before massaging the herbal conditioning oil into your scalp. Cover your hair with a towel and leave the conditioner on for an hour or two before shampooing your hair.

Herbal Dry Scalp Treatments

Another herbal dry scalp treatment that you can make yourself calls for mixing apple cider vinegar and sage tea. Add catmint to the sage tea to help moisturize a dry, itchy scalp. Give your hair new life by concocting an herbal hair rinse to treat dry hair. Add 1 tbsp. each of chamomile flowers, comfrey root, nettle and elder flowers to boiling water. Allow the mixture to stand for about half an hour, and then add 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar. Shake well. Shampoo your hair as usual before saturating your hair with the mixture to rinse.
