Colloidal silver is a popular yet controversial dietary supplement. Available in various incarnations during the past 300 years, it has more recently been linked to several side effects by the Food and Drug Administration. Most colloidal silver solutions sold today possess little silver and are relatively free of contaminants. These solutions pose only minor risks when taken judiciously. On the other hand, homemade silver solutions can pose additional risks.

Argyria

The most commonly associated condition brought upon by the use of colloidal silver is argyria. As the silver molecules circulate around the body, some become tied up in cellular membranes, where they stay indefinitely. The continued buildup in an individual eventually causes the skin and internal organs to take a permanent blue-gray cast. While the symptoms are pronounced, the condition is otherwise benign. Argyria was never common, but has become less so each year as information on the cause of the condition has become more readily available and associated to colloidal silver. With the prolonged use of colloidal silver the argyria is inevitable, however if taking low dosages of low concentration solution it will take many years before the condition shows.

Kidney Problems

Kidneys act to filter waste and control the water balance in your body. Colloidal silver that has not become integrated into other cells will be filtered through the kidneys. Many colloidal silver solution concentrations are below the Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for drinking water and considered safe. Individuals with previous incidents of renal failure and who have been advised to only drink distilled water, should not use colloidal silver products.

Neurological Problems

A 71-year-old man developed prolonged seizures after the ingestion of colloidal silver for four straight months, according to research published by the London health Sciences Center in Ontario, Canada. He later died. The onset of the seizures had been blamed on colloidal silver, however it was not verified that the supplement resulted in the man's condition. The Food and Drug Administration does advise that individuals with a pre-existing neurological condition seek the guidance of their physician before starting a regimen of colloidal silver supplements.

Interactions

Colloidal silver might interfere with the activity and effectiveness of penacillamine, thyroxine, quinolones, and tetracyclines. Always consult your doctor when taking new supplements or medications. They will be able to explain the risks and benefits in relation to your medical history.

Seldom Reported Side Effects

Rare side effects noted in studies of colloidal silver included diarrhea, nausea, headache and heartburn. Silver has been shown to inhibit probiotic bacteria within the gut and it has been hypothesized as an explanation for the rarely reported conditions. However, none of these effects were controlled for and might stem from factors outside of the study. The concomitant ingestion of probiotic supplements is recommended if you encounter any of these problems, and if they continue to persist, stop using colloidal silver and consult your physician.
