If you have lost hair, then you can try several remedies to encourage the hair to grow back. Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disease, alopecia, lupus and hormone fluctuations can cause you to lose hair. Certain drug therapies, like chemotherapy are also known to cause hair loss. Speak to your doctor before you attempt to grow back lost hair. He may need to treat the underlying cause of the hair loss before regrowth can occur.
Step 1
Protect the scalp. According to the Mayo Clinic, avoid irritating exposed portions of the scalp as you attempt to grow back your hair by limiting exposure to the elements. Wear hats and head coverings while outdoors. If the scalp is exposed to sunlight, apply a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher to the area.
Step 2
Handle hair gently. Avoid any type of styling products and tools that can weaken the hair. Avoid hair bleaching agents, perms and relaxers. Limit the use of thermal styling tools, such as blow dryers, curling irons and straighteners.
Step 3
Massage the scalp once a week. While shampooing, give the scalp a gentle massage to improve circulation to the area and encourage hair growth.
Step 4
Apply minoxidil to the scalp. Minoxidil is found in over the counter topical solutions and meant to stimulate hair growth. It should be applied twice a day. A well-known manufacturer of minoxidil treatments is Rogaine.
Step 5
Eat a well balanced diet. Nutritional deficiencies can affect your hair growth. Your diet should include foods high in iron, protein, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin E and the B vitamins. Food sources of these nutrients are green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, fish, nuts, seeds, milk, poultry and cheese. If you are concerned about not getting enough of these nutrients from food, supplements are available. Look for formulations made specifically for hair health.
