Heavy bags, ranging in weight from 40 to 100 lbs., are used by boxers, martial artists and fitness enthusiasts for skill training and overall conditioning. Hanging a bag from a ceiling requires it to be attached to a ceiling joist that will withstand the stresses created by the bag's weight and movement.
Hanging the Heavy Bag from the Ceiling
Step 1
Use a stud finder to find two adjacent ceiling joists. Mount an oak, or other hard wood, 2-inch by 4-inch board perpendicular to each joist. Use 3-1/2-inch drywall screws to attach the oak board to each joist. Use at least two screws per joist.
Step 2
Mount a steel heavy bag holder or ring to the center of the board. If your bag did not come with one, you can buy the ring from a boxing supplier or alternately, you can screw in a large 3-inch eye bolt in its place. You might need to insert a screwdriver in the eye to give you extra leverage to finish screwing it into the wood.
Step 3
Attach each of the three S-hooks on the chain to the corresponding metal rings on the heavy bag. Using a friend or a ladder to put the bottom of the bag on, connect the remaining S-hook to the bag holder ring or the eye bolt.
Step 4
Double-check that no S-hooks came off the bag before letting the heavy bag hang freely.
Tips and Warnings
- To reduce stress on the ceiling joists, distribute the heavy bag's weight among three or more joists. Make sure to inspect the integrity of the S-hooks, the chain and the ceiling board screws before doing any heavy bag work.
- The weight of a heavy bag cannot be supported by plaster or drywall. It must be anchored to a ceiling joist.
