1. Basics of Trail Running
If you like mountain biking and hiking, you might like the trail running series. Of course, if you like running at all, you might also enjoy the trail running series. For those unfamiliar with trail running, think of cross country running. Trail running started as open country, long-distance running event, but now it's specialized, and participants run over shorter paths or trails through fields and parks and sometimes mountains. A trail running series is a group of trail runs usually held at various locations, and runners are timed for each run. They are then ranked in a group based on average run times. Train running series usually occur over a few months.
2. About the Score, Not theTime
Participants in a trail running series are scored based on a percentage of their time. So, the quicker time gets more points, and the one with the quickest time receives 100 points. The scoring is usually the same for the women's races as it is for the men's races. Often a participant's top races are counted and then totaled.
3. Prizes Are a Series Away
If you belong to a running club that typically holds trail running series, you can win prizes if you have a top score at the end of the series. Depending on your level and division, you can win cash prizes and gift certificates. Some perks are given out by sponsors sometimes, and other times you receive smaller prizes like a T-shirt.
4. Dress for the Sport
A participant of a trail running series should dress appropriately. Since it's similar to marathon running (as far as distance goes), a runner should dress light. However, keep in mind that some trail running series take place in the snow and/or up in mountains. Further, some trail running series even involve snow shoes. So, dress cool or warm depending on the trail running series location and the time of year. Some layering might be good, but remember that you have to wear it. Wear well made running shoes for trail running series. It's best to wear a running shoe that has adequate support but that is also flexible. It should also be light weight for trail running series.
5. Train With No Strain
Take it easy when you train for trail running series. It's definitely a sport you have to build up to unless you're used to hiking daily in the Himalayas. Work out a practical training program and incorporate in a healthy nutrition plan. Build up your endurance during training, but don't train so hard that you're too tired and unable to run in trail running series. Avoid injury by getting enough rest and eating right.
