Some people will try almost anything to lose weight, such as diet pills, weight loss surgeries, special shoes to increase calorie burn and even chewing gums to decrease appetite. One method that may help people to lose weight easier is hypnosis. Hypnosis is the process in which a person enters an altered state of consciousness, guided by mental imagery and suggestions from a licensed hypnotherapist. While this process cannot actually cause weight loss, it may make it easier for a person to practice the healthy habits and behaviors that lead to weight loss.

Step 1

Attend regular hypnosis therapy treatments at least one a week with a licensed hypnotherapist. The Mayo Clinic states that hypnotherapy can help people to lose weight because it helps them to practice the correct behaviors surrounding eating, exercising and other healthy habits. Trust in your hypnotherapist to provide you with excellent care while you are in an altered state of consciousness and take the messages that he tells you seriously. Remember that in order for hypnotherapy to work for weight loss, you need to actually practice the behavioral strategies that hypnotherapy promotes.

Step 2

Combine regular hypnosis treatments with cognitive behavioral therapy. Vanderbilt University explains that hypnosis is more effective when combined with regular cognitive behavioral therapy treatments. These treatments are conscious and awake, relying on a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist to coach you through the behaviors which you should be practicing. You may want to keep a food journal at home to track all the foods you eat, as a food journal can be helpful to provide inside to the therapist.

Step 3

Diet in order to help facilitate weight loss. Since weight loss is a matter of eating fewer calories than you burn, reducing your caloric intake is essential. The Weight Control Information Network recommends reducing the intake of fats from dairy products and meats especially. By switch to low fat milk and cheese, and lean meats such as chicken and fish, you will consume fewer calories. Aim to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day since fruits and vegetables are filling yet low in calories. You may want to use a food journal and an online nutritional database like FitDay.com to plan your meals and track your intake. You may want to mention your dieting goals to your hypnotherapist, who can help to encourage you during hypnosis about your diet.

Step 4

Exercise at least five days per week, doing a variety of different exercises including both cardiovascular exercises and strength training. Cardiovascular exercises like running, cycling and swimming burn calories, while strength training exercises help to increase your muscle mass so that you can burn more calories at rest. Thinking about exercise while under hypnosis may improve your motivation to exercise so be sure to talk to your hypnotherapist about guiding you through mental imagery of exercise during your sessions.
