An ancient herbal remedy used in Central and South America for centuries, boldo eases digestive issues and gallbladder discomfort. As an evergreen shrub grown in Chile and Peru, boldo grows upward of 20 feet tall. With the flowers of each shrub being distinctly male or female, planting of boldo shrubs must be precise so they continue to reproduce.

Boldo Health Benefits

Boldo use is prominent in South America, but increased use in Europe and North America has happened over the past few decades as people use natural remedies to alleviate symptoms. It is only the leaves and not the boldo flowers used in tonics and formulas.
According to archeological research, boldo use dates back at least 10,000 years. It is one of the oldest known remedies still in use today. Approximately 17 alkaloids are found in boldo. People use boldo to aid digestion, cleanse the liver and increase bile production for gallbladder health.
With its strong alkaline properties, long-term boldo use is discouraged. Use it only for short periods and under proper homeopathic or naturopathic guidance.

Promotes Healthy Digestion

Digestive issues plague both young and old and interfere with daily activities. Boldo, taken as a tea or tincture, encourages proper digestion. Boldo increases saliva, which starts the digestive process. With increased saliva, the amylase enzyme breaks down the sugars of the food further, reducing bloating and indigestion.

Gallbladder Help

The gallbladder, which aids in digestion and liver function, is an important organ. The gallbladder holds bile from the liver. The gallbladder releases bile when we eat in order to digest fat. Eating high-fat meals taxes the gallbladder and liver, and causes digestive issues such as bloating and pain. Without the aid of bile and the proper functioning of the gallbladder, calcium and fat get locked in the gallbladder and cause stones.
Medicine men use boldo to increase bile and detoxify the liver. Boldo tea drunk at least twice daily supports gallbladder function.
Boldo's use as a gallbladder cure is well-documented in Chilean and Peruvian history. However, gallbladder issues must never be self-medicated, as there might be a greater issue at hand. Proper diagnosis by a physician of gallbladder issues should be conducted prior to any ingestion of gallbladder tonics or herbal remedies.
