The drug generically named alendronate, marketed in the United States as Fosamax, is used to treat osteoporosis or thinning of the bone, which is common in women after the beginning of menopause. People who take steroids as part of their medical regime also suffer from thinning of their bones. This medication also is used in the treatment of Paget's disease, another form of bone deterioration. Fosamax may be taken as a pill or solution.

Pain

The only serious common side effect of Fosamax reported by the Mayo Clinic is pain in the abdominal area. This type of pain may be indicative of a serious medical condition. The person taking Fosamax should report abdominal pain to her physician immediately.

Constipation

Constipation is a common and non-serious side effect of this medication, Drugs.com reports. As with any new medication introduced to the body, certain body functions may be altered at the beginning of treatment. This complaint of constipation should dissipate with continued used of the medication, according to Drugs.com. If it continues to be a problem, the advice of a doctor is warranted regarding further use of the drug.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea also is categorized as a non-serious common side effect of Fosamax that occurs in the beginning stages of treatment with the medicine. The person's bowels may be irritated slightly he starts taking it. This can result in abdominal cramping as well as loose stools or diarrhea. This should clear up in a couple of days, but should be reported to a doctor if diarrhea persists.

Bloating and Gas

Bloating is a sensation of being full without eating or eating only a little food. The person using Fosamax may feel bloated, which is a common non-serious side effect of the drug, typically at the start of treatment. She may experience this temporary problem as well as gas in her intestines. This also is caused by irritation of the bowels. It can cause belching or flatulence in some people. Users should consult a doctor if this does not diminish on its own.

Nausea

Nausea is another common side effect associated with Fosamax. Nausea or queasiness may occur when he first takes Fosamax, but in most cases, will end within a few days. Along with nausea, he also may vomit, but again, both of these side effects should be mild, Drugs.com says.
