Elliptical trainers provide a cardio experience that's a cross between a treadmill and a stair climber. These machines offer varying levels of intensity and are low-impact enough to protect your knees and other joints as you exercise. For many buyers, an elliptical trainer represents a fairly substantial investment, so it's important to compare models before making your purchase. As you shop for an elliptical trainer, consider features including size, design, stability and display options.

Step 1

Visit a fitness or sporting goods store to try different elliptical trainers before you buy. Although most models feature the same basic motion and operation, the overall fit and design can vary by brand. Determine if the stride length is appropriate for your body, and see if the pedal spacing feels comfortable. Make sure you can easily reach the handles or support rails without straining your back or shoulders.

Step 2

Look for a trainer that has a solid, quality construction. Check the stability of the machine and note any shakes or rattles. As you test different units, see if the pedals operate smoothly without jerking or shuddering. Avoid models that are overly noisy or squeaky.

Step 3

Ask about adjustment options. Most elliptical machines offer resistance adjustment, but some may only be adjusted between workouts, not during. Only the highest-quality elliptical trainers allow you to adjust the incline. Incline adjustment can increase the intensity of your workout or allow for more interval training options.

Step 4

Examine the display panel to check for clarity. You should be able to easily read the panel while using the machine, and the panel should display the information that's most important to you. Some options to look for include speed, distance, calories burned, heart rate and strides per minute.

Step 5

Consider the overall size of the machine. If you plan to use the elliptical in your home, find one that fits comfortably in the space you've chosen. Take note of the ceiling height in the room, as this may be an issue, depending on the height of the trainer.

Step 6

Compare units with movable arms to those with fixed rails. Elliptical trainers with movable arms allow you to work your upper body, as well as your legs. Those with fixed support rails offer only a lower-body workout. No matter which of these options you choose, look for a comfortable grip, as well as a built-in heart-rate monitor.

Step 7

Check for programming options. Advanced models offer a range of programs that can spice up your workout, while basic models may not include this feature. Consider programmable models that automatically adjust the resistance for you to make your workout even easier.
