1. Assume the Positions
The five star drill is meant to increase the passing skills of your players within the confined area of the free throw lane. To begin the five star drill in basketball you first have to place the players in correct position. Have two players stand at the corners of the free throw line on the basketball court. Then, position two more players where the baseline and the free thrown lane intersect. Finally you need to have a player stand directly underneath the basket. This player is the top point in the five star drill and begins with possession of the basketball.
2. Name the Points
Give the basketball to the player underneath the basketball and instruct them to pass the basketball to one of the four players standing inbounds. It may help to assign each position in the passing drill a number and then say that number so that the player with the basketball knows where to pass the basketball. For instance, the number one can denote the left side on the free throw line and then number the positions in a clockwise manner.
3. Player Replacement
Movement during this drill can get complicated. For example, the player receiving the pass should move towards the passer and the person passing should move to the position where he or she passed the ball. Therefore, if the 1 position player passes the ball to the 4 position, that player moves to that position and the receiver passes the basketball to another position in the star and replaces that player and so on. Basically you want the basketball in constant motion around the 5 points of the star with the players passing the basketball to position on the star and replacing the player to which they passed the ball. This can continue as long as the person conducting the drill deems necessary.
4. The Sixth man
After a certain number of passes around the star, a player then takes a shot, usually a lay-up. Then the 6th player takes the basketball and replaces the player that took the shot underneath the basket to start the drill over from beginning. If a 6th player is not available then have the player that took the shot take the position underneath basket to become the point in the drill.
5. Space it Out
Spacing is very important in the drill because you have five players moving in a confined area. Be sure the players stay on the outside of the free throw lane when they replace the player they passed the basketball to.
