The generic drug venlafaxine, marketed in the United States as Effexor and Effexor-XR, is an antidepressant used to treat major depression. It is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, often referred to by the initials SSNRI. Effexor may be prescribed to help reduce mood problems, such as depressive disorder, anxiety and panic disorder. The Mayo Clinic reports that the drug also may be used to treat flushing or hot flashes.
Insomnia and Nightmares
Patients taking Effexor may experience problems with sleep patterns when beginning treatment, including insomnia or difficulty sleeping. Unusual dreams or nightmares have been reported by the Mayo Clinic. Taking the medication the same time every day will help the body become used to the medication. Sleeping difficulties are classified as non-serious and temporary side effects of Effexor. However, consult a physician if if they do not go away or if they become severe.
Anxiety and Nervousness
Despite its uses to fight anxiety and nervousness, Effexor also may cause these problems when treatment is begun. For example, patients may feel anxious or nervous without justifiable cause. Drugs.com classifies these problems as non-serious, meaning they do not generally need medical attention and probably will resolve spontaneously after a few days of therapy.
Drowsiness and Dizziness
Because Effexor changes the way the body uses the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, it can cause temporary difficulties throughout the body. For example, patients beginning Effexor therapy may feel abnormally drowsy and tired, and may have initial problems with balance because of dizziness due to the medicine. Although dizziness is a common and non-serious side effect of Effexor, it can be dangerous because the patient may lose balance and fall.
Eating Problems
Taking Effexor at first can cause loss of appetite, which may produce an unintended loss of weight. Both of these side effects normally resolve without medical intervention. However, the Mayo Clinic recommends consulting a doctor if problems with appetite and weight loss persist.
Sexual Side Effects
Many medications prescribed as antidepressants have sexual side effects. With Effexor, the most common of these is a lowered libido, or a reduction in the ability or desire for sexual intercourse. These also are categorized as non-serious common side effects that should resolve after several days of treatment.
