Focalin XL (dexmethylphenidate) is a medication in a classification of drugs known as central nervous system (CNS) stimulants. It is used in children 6 years of age and older and adults for the management of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to Mayo Clinic, dexmethylphenidate increases attention and decreases restlessness in children and adults who are hyperactive, cannot concentrate for very long, or are easily distracted and impulsive. There are some side effects of Focalin that users should be aware of.

Headache and Insomnia

You may experience headache while taking Focalin XL. These side effects may diminish over time as your body adjusts to this medication. If headache becomes bothersome, ask your physician if you can use an over the counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for relief. Some users have reported insomnia while taking Focalin XL. You may have trouble falling or staying asleep. If insomnia is severe, speak to your healthcare provider. They may be able to prescribe you medication to help you sleep.

Nausea and Loss of Appetite

Nausea and loss of appetite are possible side effects of Focalin XL. These side effects may lessen over time as your body adjusts to Focalin XL. Consider eating a bland diet and having smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. These dietary changes may help alleviate gastrointestinal effects. Dietary shakes such as Boost or Ensure can be added to your diet to provide additional nutrients and calories. If loss of appetite becomes severe and you are losing weight, consult your physician.

Serious Side Effects

There are some serious side effects that can occur while taking Focalin XL. According to Drugs.com, signs and symptoms can include dangerously high blood pressure, fast or uneven heart rate, blurred vision, unusual behavior, confusion, or twitching. It is possible to experience an allergic reaction to Focalin XL. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the tongue or throat. If you experience any of these side effects seek emergency medical attention.
