Colon cleansing is generally categorized into five procedures. The various types of cleansing can vary in efficiency and should be performed according to the manufacturer's directions or by a professional. Learn about the various technologies for colon cleansing in order to decide which of the available products will provide the most comfort and best fit your needs.
Colon Hydrotherapy
According to the Colon Cleansing & Constipation Resource Center, colon hydrotherapy is a cleansing method in which a disposable tube is placed into the rectum to clear the colon of toxins. This process uses an FDA-approved tube and warm, filtered water to ensure proper sanitation. Colon hydrotherapy removes impacted bowels, toxins and bacteria and cleanses the large intestine. This type of cleanse should only be performed by a trained and licensed professional.
Enemas
An enema is a rudimentary device designed for in-home use that can be purchased at a pharmacy. It is designed to purge material from the lowest portion of the colon. The tubal device is inserted into the rectum to empty bowel waste. A downside of an enema is that it does not remove any compacted materials. There are a variety of alternative enema products on the market, including clay enemas and coffee enemas, which are both administered the same way.
Herbal Supplements
Herbal colon cleansing supplements are an effective tool for short-term elimination by inducing contractions in the bowel walls. Herbal supplements are unable to treat digestive disorders or severe constipation because they are unable to clean waste from the colon. Using these supplement incorrectly can cause digestive complications and risk of infection, so be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions.
Laxatives
Laxatives help cleanse the colon by emptying the bowels and are used as a short-term treatment for constipation. Laxatives should not be used as a treatment for chronic constipation as they are not able to clean bacterial and compacted bowels. According to the Mayo Clinic, side effects can include dehydration, loss of muscle around the colon lining and frequent bowel movements. Manufacturers and medical professionals warn against laxative misuse and long-term use.
Oxygen-Based Cleansers
Oxygen-based colon cleansers use a variety of ozonated magnesium oxides to remove impacted materials and toxins from the intestinal tract. Like an enema, oxygen-based cleansers use a tubal system for irrigation. They melt mucous and other debris, as well as regulate digestion. The tube is introduced into the rectal cavity and cleanses the entire colon.
