The sinuses are air-filled cavities that help to intercept dust, dirt, pollen and bacteria that you breathe in. However, during allergy seasons, the sinuses may become filled with pollen and other matter, resulting in infection and painful symptoms such as congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and more. Herbal treatments to clear the sinuses may offer some relief.

Garlic Juice

If your sinus symptoms include painful to severe congestion, consider using a garlic juice remedy that is administered via the nose, according to MotherNature.com. Garlic's antibacterial properties make it a good solution for fighting off bacteria and viruses found in the sinuses.
Use a garlic press to obtain garlic juice--enough to place in an eyedropper. Lean your head back and administer three drops into each nostril. Keep your head back for at least five minutes, then sit up. The garlic juice should seep out of your nostrils. Use a tissue or cloth to soak up the remainder. For severe sinus symptoms, repeat up to three times per day; for milder symptoms, perform once per day.

Chinese Skullcap, Devil's Claw, Feverfew and Willow Bark

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, several herbal remedies have been linked with preventing or relieving sinus headaches, where pressure is especially felt in the sinus cavities. Most of the herbs work in a two-fold manner: they strengthen the immune system and thin the mucus that can fill the sinus cavities, which increases drainage. Examples of sinus-helping herbs include Chinese skullcap, devil's claw, feverfew and willow bark. Each varies in terms of recommended dosage, which also may be differentiated based on your sinus headache severity. Also, remember to speak to your physician first before taking herbal remedies, as some may interfere with prescription medications.

Eucalyptus Oil

The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends inhaling steam as a means to keep the nasal passages moist and to relieve sinus congestion. For an additional benefit, add eucalyptus oil to aid in sinus relief.
Boil water in a pot, then add in several drops of eucalyptus oil to the mixture. Pour into a new bowl, then drape a towel over your head and lean over the bowl to inhale the steam and eucalyptus oil. The oil will reach up to the nasal mucus membranes and work to reduce nasal stuffiness.
