Although coffee is considered a super food because it’s full of disease-fighting antioxidants, overconsumption can have negative side effects. In excess, coffee can trigger anxiety, poor sleep, jitteriness and headaches. There are a variety of substitutes for coffee that can give you the same pick-me-up without the uncomfortable side effects.

Feeling Grassy

Replace your daily cup of coffee with ground or blended wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass is full of nutrients like magnesium, iron and vitamins A, C and E. Unlike coffee, wheatgrass does not contain caffeine. Instead, the vitamins and minerals supply your body with energy. Goosegrass, which is actually a type of weed, is also a healthy coffee substitute. It is full of vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin B-3 and silica, which can help strengthen the bones and teeth. Goosegrass can also aid your digestive system because it’s a natural laxative. It doesn’t contain caffeine and tastes very similar to regular coffee. The seeds, after being dried for one week and roasted for five minutes in the oven, can be ground and steeped just like coffee.

Get to the Root of It

Roast and brew dandelion root instead of coffee. This root tastes and smells like coffee, but it is full of vitamins and minerals such as beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin D. Dandelion root is also a mild laxative, which can help improve digestive problems. You can also grind and brew chicory root for a caffeine-free, coffeelike drink. Chicory root is full of vitamins and minerals like zinc, iron, potassium and vitamins A, B, C and D. It is also high in disease-fighting antioxidants like beta-carotene.

More Tea, Please

Sip on yerba mate tea, which is low in caffeine and high in vitamins and minerals like calcium, magnesium and vitamins A, C and E. It also contains antioxidants and B vitamins, which help provide natural energy. Or drink green tea, which is low in caffeine but still supplies your body with energy. Green tea is also full of powerful disease-fighting antioxidants and is a mild diuretic, which helps your body get rid of excess fluid.

Veg -- and Fruit -- Out

Drink pomegranate juice, which is rich in energizing B vitamins and vitamin C. Pomegranate juice is also high in antioxidants and doesn’t contain any caffeine. Alternatively, you can drink a smoothie made out of leafy greens like kale and spinach, which are full of vitamin K. Leafy greens contain vitamin B-5, which your body uses for energy. Add blueberries, mango or bananas to your smoothie for an added punch of nutrition.
