A home remedy for health and healing may help your body repair itself by stimulating a response from cells. For example, witch hazel acts as an anti-inflammatory by causing vessels to constrict, according to the World Health Organization's (WHO) website article "WHO Monograph on Selected Medicinal Plants Volume 2." A remedy with beneficial bacteria helps the immune system by inhibiting the growth of toxic bacteria, as cited from the University of Maryland Medical Center. It's easy to find natural remedies in grocery stores or herbal shops.

Witch Hazel

Mayo Clinic defines hemorrhoids as swollen and inflamed veins in the anus and lower rectum area. Witch hazel helps treat this condition. The bark and the leaves contain chemicals that give the shrub its astringent properties. According to WHO, treatments made with the bark and leaves "sealed cell membranes and reduced capillary permeability" in low concentrations. To make a witch hazel infusion for external use, steep 1 tsp of dried leaves in approximately 9 ounces of water for 30 minutes. Mayo Clinic cautions against using a hemorrhoid product for longer than a week unless directed by a physician.

Lactobacillus

In "Natural Folk Remedies," Lelord Kordel writes that putrefactive bacteria live in bowels and release harmful toxics. These toxins impair the function of healthy cells. When lactobacillus acidophilus breaks down food, it creates an acidic environment that is inhospitable for unhealthy bacteria, as reported by University of Maryland Medical Center. A strain called lactobacillus casei Shirota eases constipation, as cited from PubMed.gov abstract of "Probiotic beverage containing lactobacillus casei Shirota improves gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with chronic constipation." Include slices of apples and pears on your yogurt with lactobacillus casei Shirota when you wish to try a constipation remedy.

Garlic

Chop a clove of raw garlic and place the bits into 1 tsp. of honey for a sore throat remedy. "Physician Desk Reference for Herbal Medicine Third Edition" states that garlic tablets enhanced natural killer cells within the immune system during vitro studies. The honey coats your throat and takes some of the bite out of raw garlic. Mayo Clinic reports that preliminary studies suggest garlic may reduce the severity of upper respiratory infections, but the test results were taken from studies that were not well-designed. Because studies reflect that garlic reduces blood's ability to clot, do not take this remedy if your doctor has placed you on a medication that acts a blood thinner. Check with your doctor to ensure garlic or any home remedy is not contradicted for a prescription medication or a pre-existing medical condition.
