Deconex Side Effects

The generically named medications, phenylephrine and guaifenesin are combined into a number of medications marketed in the United States under many brand names, including Deconex DMX. Phenylephrine is a decongestant, which helps relieve nasal congestion. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps loosen phlegm to make it easy to expel. Deconex DMX and Deconex IR are over-the-counter medications used most often to treat colds and influenza. It also is available in prescription strength as Deconex Oral and Deconex DM.

Excitability and Irritability

Taking doses of Deconex may cause some non-serious common side effects during the initial stage of use. Excitability and irritability are common. Persons first using Deconex may be edgy and easily upset by conversations or actions or others. These are classified, Drugs.com reports, as temporary side effects that only should last a few days in most cases. They do not often require medical attention unless they are severe or continue a week or more.

Diarrhea

Deconex can cause a disruption in the normal digestive processes when first taken. This can result in abdominal cramping, as well as diarrhea, or loose stools. While frequent, urgent trips to the bathroom are not enjoyable, this is not a serious side effect and should pass in a few days, Drugs.com reports.

Upset Stomach

The combination of phenylephrine and guaifenesin in Deconex can induce stomach problems including queasiness and nauseousness. These are also considered non-serious side effects associated with taking Deconex. Consult a doctor if the discomfort does not stop in a few days, or if it feels severe.

Insomnia and Drowsiness

Deconex may also affect sleep patterns. For example, persons using the drug may find it difficult to either fall asleep or stay asleep. Persons may also have the opposite problem of drowsiness even though they have had a full night's sleep. These, too, are temporary side effects and should pass in a few days.
