Tee ball is a sport that is based on baseball and played by young children to develop motor skills. Tee ball players hit a stationary ball from a tee, instead of hitting a pitched ball, as older children do when playing baseball or softball. Many coaching points and strategies from baseball apply directly to tee ball, as the two sports have similar techniques in terms of batting, fielding and throwing.
Batting
In tee ball, it's easier for players to make contact with the ball and to build their confidence, because any variation in height and speed on the ball is eliminated. Tee ball coaches should ensure every that player gets plenty of repetitions during batting practice. Players waiting in line for a turn may well result in the group losing attention. When batting, focus on teaching the players to make firm contact with the ball. Praise a tee ball player enthusiastically when he succeeds. The bat should be gripped firmly at the base. Encourage a young tee ball player to keep his eye on the ball when swinging the tee ball bat.
Fielding
Tee ball players receive good fielding practice, because every ball is hit into open play. With young players, teach them to cover their position in the field. During practice, even if you need to bat, ensure balls are hit to all different parts of the field. A young tee ball player will not enjoy a practice session where she stands for long periods in the field without having to field a ball. Young tee ball players will also become distracted when bored, which could result in a chaotic session. You can increase repetitions by pairing off players and having them hit balls to each other to field. Give basic coaching points, such as creating a barrier in case you miss the ball with your hands.
Throwing
Throwing is a vital defensive skill in tee ball. Teach young tee ball players to throw by having them stand in pairs five to 10 yards apart and facing each other. Have players throw the ball to each other and teach the basic coaching point of following through with the hand pointing to the target of the throw. Increase difficulty by increasing the distance between the two tee ball players. Add fun and competition by scoring a point for every catch before the ball hits the ground. Time one minute and the highest scoring pair wins a round.
Coaching
When coaching tee ball, you should always convey a positive and energetic demeanor. This will set the tone for group and is a good example. Use positive reinforcement and avoid public criticism. Plan your tee ball coaching sessions in advance and use a number of different drills for 10 to 15 minutes each.
