All golfers come to the game wanting to improve, get more competitive and shoot lower scores. Those goals can be accomplished, but the key is to establish good fundamentals by developing a full and complete swing. Medium- and high-handicap golfers may take several years to develop a full and complete golf swing.
Stance
You can't have a full golf swing if you don't have a comfortable stance when you address the ball. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Your left shoulder, for a right-handed golfer, needs to face the target. You should play the ball midway in your stance. If you are using a driver, play it one ball width closer to your front foot. Your knees should be bent in an athletic position so you can transfer your weight to your back side and then drive your weight forward as you make contact with the ball. Grip the club with a firm grip, but do not choke the club too tightly. Your grip should be at a "6" on a scale of 1 to 10. That's about the same as a firm grip with a new business associate.
Backswing
In order to hit the ball with maximum clubhead speed--the key to distance on a golf shot--you must use more than just your hands and arms. Your hips must get involved in your golf swing. You will have to roll your hips to the right and then have your shoulders, arms and hands follow. The further you can turn your hips, the greater distance you will be able to move your club and create clubhead speed. If you can make a full hip turn, your hands will be a little bit past shoulder height.
Turn and Follow Through
When you have turned your hips fully to the right and your hands have reached the shoulder or a bit past, it's time to turn your hips in order to generate clubhead speed. As you turn your hips to the left, don't rush your hands. Let your hips clear the hitting zone and then have your hands follow. As you do this, you must stay focused on the back center portion of the ball. As your hands drive through the ball, snap your right wrist on impact and continue to move your hands past your hips until they get up to shoulder height. This will give you maximum distance and a full golf swing.
