In the world of alternative medicine, several potent herbs exist that provide a variety of benefits for a man's health. When discussing men's health, the issues of erectile dysfunction and male infertility are often at the forefront. Several herbs have shown promise as a therapeutic treatment for at least one of these conditions.
Maca
Maca, or Lepidium meyenii, is a Peruvian root that has been traditionally used as a fertility aid and aphrodisiac for both men and women. It is commonly marketed as an alternative to treatments such as Viagra for male impotence. According to the Langone Medical Center at New York University, scientific studies support maca's use as a libido enhancer for men but not necessarily as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Other potential but unproven uses for maca are as a treatment for male infertility, benign prostate enlargement and stress. Doses at which maca has been found effective are 1,500mg to 3,000mg per day.
Asian Ginseng
Asian ginseng, or Panax ginseng, has been used for approximately 2,000 years as a tonic for physical and mental energy. According to the University of Michigan Health System, Asian ginseng is a scientifically backed treatment for erectile dysfunction. A 1,800mg dosage of Asian ginseng given to men with erectile dysfunction over a period of three months improved both libido and ability to maintain an erection. Other conditions that Asian ginseng may be help include stress, male infertility and epilepsy. It may also be useful as an athletic aid. Standardized extracts of Asian ginseng are commonly taken in doses of 200mg to 500mg per day.
Yohimbe
Yohimbe, or Pausinystalia yohimbe, is a traditional treatment for erectile dysfunction composed of the bark of an African tree. The alkaloid yohimbine appears to be the main active constituent, and according to the University of Michigan Health System, it has been shown in double-blind, peer-reviewed studies to be effective in erectile dysfunction. A safe dose of yohimbe is any that yields between 15mg and 30mg total of the active alkaloid, yohimbine.
